Burke’s Grandparents: A Vital Part of the Community
Our distance learning world has created new opportunities for special members of our Burke’s school community — grandparents!
As everyone becomes more savvy jumping on and off Zoom, it has allowed some grandparents from far away to volunteer in the classroom. A Burke’s grandmother dropped in all the way from Maine last week to lead the K Red kindergarteners in a number of songs, including, “Do-Re-Mi” (click here to listen!).
Burke’s grandparents are such an important part of the community and are invited to join the Burke’s Grandparents’ Council. The Council was formed in 2015 and consists of an inclusive group that welcomes any interested grandparent or special friend to become more involved with the school and support Burke’s mission through active engagement and participation in the school community. We are grateful to our returning co-chairs, Christina Norman, Tom Perkins, and Barbara Sklar, for their creativity and continued leadership of the group.
One of the founding objectives of the council is to promote all the wonderful ways grandparents can be involved in life at Burke’s.
- Assist with the planning and production of Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day
- Serve as an ambassador to welcome other grandparents
- Assist with bringing special programs to the students
- Volunteer for Fall Festival (in 2021) and Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day
- Guest edit the Grandparents’ Newsletter
- Attend special school assemblies and speaker engagements
- Volunteer in the lunchroom and library (please note, on-campus volunteer opportunities are currently on hold during the 2020-21 school year)
While all Council events and activities during the 2020-21 school year will be virtual, there are still many opportunities to become engaged on a deeper level at Burke’s. Visit kdbs.org/community/grandparents to learn more about the Council’s activities.
