Burke's Sends Record Number of Attendees and Presenters to Diversity Conference

Eleven teachers, including three who presented their own workshop based on a Burke's student project, attended the NAIS People of Color Conference in late 2017.

From November 30-December 2, the National Association of Independent Schools held its 30th annual People of Color Conference in Anaheim. This event serves as a space for educators and administrators of color (as well as allies) from independent schools to gather together and network, learn, and hear from voices such as civil rights advocate Kimberlé Crenshaw and author Ta-Nehisi Coates. More than 6,000 professionals and student leaders attended this year's conference. (Click here to learn more about it.)

And that number included 11 faculty and staff members from Burke's, a new record! Our faculty and staff in attendance were able to participate in a range of workshops to give them strategies for success in sustaining and building inclusive independent school communities.

Among them were Upper School art teacher Danielle Denton, Spanish teacher Anthony Sabedra, and Makery Facilitator Susan Deemer, who presented a session titled "Celebrating Influential, Famous Latinas in History: A Mixed-media Project." The workshop reviewed this lesson from the 2016-17 school year where students created stop-motion movies in the Makery that illustrated the lives of prominent Latina women as part of a collaborative effort between the teachers listed above.
