Lower School P.E. Tries Out New Mindfulness Exercises

This year, Lower School P.E. Teacher Jonathan Portero-Brown is trying out a new warm-up method for students in first through fourth grades: a practice known as Bal-A-Vis-X.

Bal-A-Vis-X stands for
Balance/Auditory/Vision/eXercises and uses rhythm and mindfulness to navigate through a series of movements that bring the mind and body together. Before launching into their usual activities, Burke's students partner up in near silence to work together through games that require deep concentration and attention.

Mr. Portero-Brown brought Bal-A-Vis-X to Burke's after learning about the practice in professional-development workshops.
