Eighth Grade "Breaks Out" in English Class

Eighth graders got a taste of the cooperation and problem-solving that games from Breakout EDU require when they tried one out in their English class on the week of September 18. (Think escape room!)

After concluding a lesson on the political conditions of Germany in the 1930s and a vocabulary review of new terms in their next reading assignment, The Diary of Anne Frank, students tackled the project. Teacher Debbie Yoon passed out a set of two black boxes, one smaller than the other, with the ultimate goal to get to their copies of the book locked inside the bigger box.

In order to get there, they had to look for clues contained in poetry and prose to find the code — and they had to do it together. The game was similar to one faculty and staff members played on the first day of Opening Meetings in August. Eighth graders did the same, and after some frustration and befuddlement, they solved the puzzles and reached their books.
