Wisdom from Granny Burke Frames First SEL Theme of Year

A note from the past emphasizes the importance of kindness, just in time for the first Social-Emotional Learning theme of the 2017-18 school year.

Before school started and teachers and staff were first gathering to prepare for the year, a team-building activity put a spotlight on a note written long ago by "Granny Burke," a.k.a. Katherine Delmar Burke's mother, Elizabeth Kennedy Burke. Granny Burke was a fixture at her daughter's school in its earliest years.

The note reads:

"Always be kind
Always be true
And all good things
Will come to you."

Those same words were chalked onto the driveway for the first day of school by members of Burke's Social-Emotional Learning Committee, which includes faculty members in both divisions, as a precursor to the first SEL theme of the 2017-18 school year: kindness. The theme was introduced at the first Lower School Assembly of the year.
