Eighth Grade Examines Transgender Rights

As one of their last projects in eighth-grade English over the last few years, students have been reading the book Gracefully Grayson, the story of a transgender girl as she discovers her true identity.

In April, eighth graders heard from Rae Sweet, a transgender activist and student at San Francisco State University, who spoke about their experience in making their transition. Students took careful notes of what they heard and asked thought-provoking questions.

To finish out the unit, eighth graders did a deep dive into the topic of transgender rights in the United States, eventually writing letters to local and national leaders and compiling posters with factoids and statistics that were then displayed around the Upper School. Students also made available pins like the one at right for those classmates and faculty/staff members who are interested in wearing one.
