An urban Indigenous women-led land trust based in the San Francisco Bay Area,
Sogorea 'Te Land Trust works to facilitate the return of Indigenous land to Indigenous people. The organization was founded by Corinna Gould, an Ohlone elder, and activist. Third and fourth graders had the opportunity to learn about the various land areas the organization is working to preserve, some of the Ohlone history, and what it is like to be Ohlone and a changemaker in today’s world.
Students also learned about members of the Ohlone tribe who live in Yelamu, the land that we now refer to as San Francisco, and were taught the original names of many Bay Area cities. A focus of the session was to learn about the
West Berkeley Ohlone Shellmound and Historic Village site that was named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in September.
