Holocaust Escapee Speaks to Burke's Eighth Graders

On Wednesday, November 30, eighth graders gathered in the Media Room to hear from George Elbaum, a survivor of the Nazi's Invasion of Poland who eventually made it out of the Warsaw Ghetto thanks to his mother's tireless work.

He was only one year old when the Nazis invaded in 1939 and never knew many of his family members, including his father, who were sent to concentration camps.

George eventually came to the United States as a refugee and settled in Oregon, later attending MIT and becoming an aeronautical engineer. He wrote a book about his experiences, Neither Yesterdays Nor Tomorrows: Vignettes of a Holocaust Childhood, in 2009. Click here to learn more about him, and click here to view more photos of his visit.
