Students Create Vibrant Dia de los Muertos Installation

Commemorating Dia de los Muertos is a natural fit for Spanish classes, as the holiday is popular in Latin-American countries. But this year, students across the Upper School joined together for a colorful display honoring the tradition.
The installation, located in the Upper School hallway, is the result of work created by Burke's girls in art classes, advisory, Makery, and — yes — Spanish. Fifth-grade students created altars that honored departed relatives; sixth graders made metallic etchings that feature traditional Dia de los Muertos images and assembled small skull dioramas using paper circuitry; seventh graders quilled skulls and crafted paper butterflies that were inscribed with heartfelt notes; and eighth graders created stop motion animation vignettes with Spanish voice-overs to honor family members and pets who have passed. The Dia de los Muertos exhibit will be on display during parent-teacher conferences outside of room 201 in the Upper School (directly above the Library).
