Fifth Grade P.E.

In fifth grade, students lay a foundation of knowledge and skills that they can continue to build on in the coming years. Instruction aims to meet the students where they are, help them push out of their comfort zones, and learn to challenge themselves physically and socially. Activities are introduced to help students develop collaboration and cooperation skills, and exploring what it means to be a positive and productive partner and group member is a year-long theme.
The major units focused on are badminton, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, and volleyball with explorations in other sports and movement activities. Fitness development is interwoven throughout the year, with a major fifth-grade project being our collaborative distance run.

Students spend fifth grade learning how to be positive class members, learning to push themselves beyond their perceived limits, and establishing fundamental movement patterns as the foundational building blocks for more complex skills in future years. To this end, all assessment in fifth grade is formative and gameplay is not part of the curriculum.
