The Student Support Services team works collaboratively to support our students, families and teachers. This team is made up of Counselors and Learning Specialists who are professionally trained and credentialed to provide specialized services that meet individual students’ needs. Parents and guardians are encouraged to contact a member of this team to discuss their daughter’s development or request assistance with a particular concern.

In addition, B
urke's also consults with outside professionals trained in the areas of Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy and Pediatric Neuropsychology, to better address student needs and, when necessary, make appropriate referrals.

Occupational Therapy Screening: October of each school year

Occupational Therapy focuses on muscle development and coordination including fine motor and hand skills, gross motor skills, visual-perceptual skills and the body's ability to take in and integrate sensory information.

Rebecca Hedricks, OTR/L of PlayWrite Therapy, observes all of the kindergarten and first grade classrooms and engages in activities with individual students in grades K-4 that are referred by classroom teachers. The information that we gather from this screening is very helpful in guiding our instruction in both the classroom and physical education. The Learning Specialist will contact families about individual screenings and all parents will have the opportunity to discuss the screening with their daughter's classroom teachers at their fall parent-teacher conferences.

A workshop led by Rebecca Hedricks in early December provides parents with an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about motor development and sensory integration.

Pediatric Neuropsychology Consultations: Ongoing, as needed, each school year

Pediatric Neuropsychology, in the context of this consultation with Burke's, focuses on understanding the brain-behavior connection, as information in the field of neuroscience influences teaching strategies and interventions in the classroom.

Leyla Bologlu, Ph.D., consults on a limited basis with the Student Support Services team and Lower School faculty on learning styles, instructional strategies, classroom accommodations and general student success. We are fortunate to have Dr. Bologlu as part of our team and to benefit from her incredible expertise and insight.

Speech & Language Screenings: January of each school year

Speech and Language Therapy focuses on language development including communication skills, sound production (articulation), auditory skills and verbal expression and reasoning.

Jennifer Lopez, MS CCC-SLP, screens 1st-grade students receiving support in the Learning Center as well as any other students in grades K-4 that are referred by classroom teachers. The information that we gather from this screening is very helpful in informing our classroom instruction and supporting language development. Teachers and Learning Specialists will meet with individual families to discuss these results.

A workshop led by Jennifer Lopez in early February provides parents with an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about language development.
Burke's mission is to educate, encourage and empower girls. Our school combines academic excellence with an appreciation for childhood so that students thrive as learners, develop a strong sense of self, contribute to community, and fulfill their potential, now and throughout life.
