Sixth Grade Receives Four ExploraVision Honorable Mentions

The sixth grade has been designing new technologies for 20 years into the future as a part of the ExploraVision project. Part of a national competition (Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision), the project integrated science content with design thinking, engineering, technology, research, critical thinking, and creativity.

Burke’s sixth graders received FOUR honorable mentions this year, a distinction given to the top 10% of the 5,000+ ExploraVision projects submitted nationwide!

The four projects receiving honorable mentions were:

5th Wheel: A steering wheel cover that measures your blood alcohol level by using your perspiration in your hands and makes the car inoperable if levels are too high.

LetMeSee: A device that allows colorblind people to see in color by using a nano chip and contact lenses with nanostructures that mimic the color-detecting cones in the eye.

Links: A therapy uses false cancer cells embedded in a mist taken in by an inhaler to activate an immune response that would kill the cancer cells without chemotherapy or radiation.

See4All: A set of bionic eyes with cameras that connect to the optic nerve and brain via bluetooth.

Other projects included a toothbrush that detects and eliminates plaque, a smart refrigerator that uses an app to remind you when food is about to spoil or what you can make with what you have, and an app that provides a virtual holographic tutor.
