VIDEO: Hour of Code Encompasses Burke's Campus

The second annual Hour WEEK of Code at Burke's was a big success, with close to 75 activities that kept students in all grades busy throughout each day of the week, from early Open Code before classes started to playing coding games in Tree House after school.

We saw students taking part in activities such as:
  • Coding notes into MadeWithCode's online Music Mixer to create their own songs
  • Programming movements and dance steps into interactive Dash robots
  • Animating a medieval-era character from a recent reading assignment using a program called Scratch
  • Playing all sorts of unplugged games to learn about logic and algorithms

This year, Hour of Code was truly felt across all corners of campus, with all elements of the curriculum finding a place in the week's activities — even P.E. got in on the action! We invite you to take a look at a selection of those cross-curricular projects in this video. Don't forget to download our extensive Hour of Code 2015 Family Guide, with all sorts of suggestions for books, games and apps to keep the learning going at home.

We were also honored to welcome a panel of young women with interests and careers in coding — alumnae Stephanie Dee '96 and Katie N. '13, along with Grace King, daughter of Burke's Director of Technology Phil King — to the Upper School assembly on the morning of December 9 to speak about their experiences. Among their advice was this gem: "Don't ever give up!"

Burke's Hour of Code caught the attention of the media, with KGO 810 and other reporters coming to campus on Monday to take a look. Listen to KGO's report at this link, and be sure to check out our photos from all five days at the Burke’s photo site.
