International Women's Day Assembly Celebrates Girl Power

March is Women's History Month, and International Women's Day is March 8. To celebrate both, Burke's held an assembly on Wednesday, March 3, that was packed with girl power.
The annual International Women's Day Assembly featured a wide variety of projects and speeches from both within the Burke's community and from visitors. The event included:

  • A talk and Q&A with Ann Killion, current sportswriter for the San Francisco Chronicle and bestselling author, who spoke about her experiences in a mostly male field.
  • An introduction by Lower School art teacher Yara Herman to art projects that illustrate the chasm between standard stereotypes for girls and how Burke's students see themselves — with commentary from two of those students (Piper A. '19 and Mei Ling B. '19).
  • T-shirts with positive messages about female heroes that were created and modeled by seventh graders.
  • An introduction to Gugulethu Radebe, Burke's new Teach with Africa faculty member.
  • A speech from Madison K. '16 about the accomplishments and legacy of tennis player Billie Jean King.
The full assembly is available for viewing online on the Burke's YouTube page, and more photos are available here.
