Everything is Awesome: Legos Take Center Stage at Burke's

That headline can only mean one thing: Legos recently paid a visit to the Burke's campus, which they did in force on Saturday, February 7, for the Junior First Lego League Expo.
Students from as far away as Sacramento joined four teams of Burke's students in showing off the creations they've been working on for the past few months — Lego-powered landscapes and simple machines to help solve a problem or research a topic. Burke's four teams tackled everything from green geckos to how hospitals work, and made the dioramas to match.

Makery Facilitator Jenny Howland, Lower School Science Teacher Elizabeth McDonald and Director of After-School Programs Erin Nieuwenhuijs oversaw the projects.

Three teams (of the 12 entered) were judged at any one time, answering questions about what it was like to work as a team and how they put together their projects, while the waiting students enjoyed with maker-centric activities in the Gym. The Discovery Museum and the robotics team from Lowell High School staffed just two of the available booths there to entertain students and their families.
