Students Join Forces to Identify Gender Stereotypes

A recent collaboration between the 4th and 7th grades that involved the identification of gender stereotypes. Students in Ms. Herman's Lower School art classes joined with Ms. Deemer's 7th-grade science students to identify what society considers to be masculine and feminine traits, as well as how they respond to those constructs.
Students came together to share their views about existing gender stereotypes in their world, analyzed them and identified which ones resonated and which ones limited their experience and the full range of who they are or who they might become.

The girls participated in a discussion that focused on Marian Wright Edelman’s quote: “You can’t be what you can’t see.” The girls then identified women who have challenged a gender stereotype, placed their name on a leaf and added it to the Tree of Strength

Some of those names included:
  • Helen Keller
  • Michelle Obama
  • Serena Williams
  • Eleanor Roosevelt
  • Amelia Earhart
  • Wilma Rudolph
  • Ms. Morgan
  • Ms. Deemer
In the final phase of the project, students then placed their own name on a leaf with a sentence on the back about how they hope to challenge a gender stereotype and placed it on the tree. Click here to see more photos from this project!
