New York Times Reviews Novels of Two Burke's Alumnae

The Sunday New York Times Book Review (July 11, 2010) featured excellent reviews of the recent works of two Burke's alumnae, Jennifer Egan '76 and Vendela Vida '85.

Jennifer Egan
was raised in San Francisco and currently resides in New York. After graduating from Burke's in 1976, Jennifer attended Lowell High School, University of Pennsylvania, and St John's College, Cambridge. In addition to her new novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad, she is the author of The Invisible Circus, Look at Me, Emerald City and Other Stories and The Keep. Her short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harpers, Granta, McSweeney's and other magazines. Jennifer is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library. Her non-fiction articles appear frequently in the New York Times Magazine



Vendela VidaA member of Burke's Class of 1985, Vendela Vida was also raised in San Francisco and currently lives in the Bay Area. She attended University High School and Middlebury College and earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. Vendela is the author of three previous critically acclaimed novels And Now You Can Go, Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name, and Girls on the Verge. She also co-wrote the 2009 screenplay for "Away We Go." Vendela is a founding co-editor of The Believer magazine, as well as a teacher and founding board member of 826 Valencia, a writing center for young people. Vendela received Burke's Distinguished Alumna Award this June and was our Pansy Day Speaker.
