Arts Festival 2010: Fashion Show
In celebration of our school and community’s dedication to the universal green effort, the fourth graders have put together a fashion accessories collection that is not only made up of used and recycled materials, but truly functional, at times fancy but always fabulous!!! The project began with a brainstorm that yielded numerous design ideas. Once their final selection was made, students had to think about ways to incorporate specific materials such as the large amounts of burlap left over from last year’s dinner auction, in addition to some very used Burke’s uniforms. With the help of parent volunteers, students machine sewed their handbags together. They learned to appliqué various fabric scraps on top of the burlap, and used additional recycled materials to enhance the finished look. They learned about the commercial aspects of a design and fashion career from guest speaker and local artist Vichelle Mixon, who inspired them to follow their dreams while discussing the ways that women can start their own business and support one another.
