In Our Family Exhibit on Display until October 30
Have you and your family been through the front office and library to view the Family Diversity Project's
In
Our Family: Portraits of All Kinds of Families exhibit?
If not, visit soon because it will close next Friday, October 30. The exhibit includes photographs of 20 different families along with the accompanying words of parents and children. It also highlights the fact that every family, no matter its composition, has strengths and unique challenges. Those that thrive place a premium on respecting, loving, and valuing each other and their unique bond. The exhibit conveys the messages that:
- Families love and nurture children.
- There are happy and flourishing families of many kinds.
- Families are formed in different ways.
- Families exemplify diversity, coming in all shapes, sizes, colors and configurations.
- Families have much in common, but each family is unique.
- Children can be hurt by stereotypes, prejudice, name-calling and teasing.
- It is important to appreciate different kinds of families and to value differences
Lower School library Susan Faust has compiled a bibliography that allows you and your daughter to explore the messages of the exhibit. It includes books about individual identity for our youngest students, moving into books about the various types of families featured in this exhibit. You will also find a copy of the bibliography in our library as well as scrapbook about Burke's family photographs that Kim Wargo collected last year. This scrapbook is a beautiful testament to the many types of families that make up the Burke's community.
I look forward to seeing you on campus in the upcoming days.
