Seventh Grade History Curriculum
Two of the “essential questions” guiding the seventh grade History curriculum are “How does culture shape who we are?” and “Why is it important to look at different points of view while studying history?” By studying various cultural encounters in U.S. History from different points of view, students will gain perspective on how contact between cultures can lead to conflict. Following a general overview of cultural categories, the course will focus on the European voyages of exploration to the Americas in the 14th & 15th centuries; the establishment of the original 13 colonies of the United States; Manifest Destiny and the opening of the American frontier; the eras of slavery and Civil Rights; and the waves of immigration to the United States in the last two centuries. Students will engage in a wide variety of learning experiences including simulations, research projects, discussion of current events, debates, and a cultural heritage fair.
Underlying this conceptual emphasis is an intensive program of skill development. The skills emphasized include geography; community building and leadership skills (listening, negotiating, sharing); critical, creative and analytical thinking; note-taking; expository writing; revision and proofreading strategies; oral expression; test-taking; organization; and research.
