Second Grade Great American Women Sculptures
In conjunction with their class unit on Great American Women, second graders sculpted these amazing plaster figures. First, they learned how to draw proportional bodies. Next, they outlined the drawings with wire and masking tape, creating an armature, or skeleton, for the 3D structure. The armature was bulked up with newspapers, forming the muscles and body mass. Next, students used plaster strips to cover and solidify the figure. Finally, they brought each woman to life by making clothing and accessories out of plaster, foil, and other found objects. The accessories were painted with acrylics, but the bodies were left white for added contrast.
