Technology

The technology program is project-based. Through a collaborative partnership that includes the classroom teachers, technology teacher, and specialists, skills are integrated and developed within the framework of the school's curriculum while working toward competency in the six NETS•S standards for students from the International Society for Technology in Education:

1. Creativity and Innovation
2. Communication and Collaboration
3. Research and Information Fluency
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
5. Digital Citizenship
6. Technology Operations and Concepts

Embedded in the technology program are problem solving and critical thinking skills. The technology lab provides an environment that facilitates self-directed exploration and learning. As new skills are introduced, students are able to direct their exploration and incorporation of them through age appropriate activities. In Lower School students come to the lab with their classroom teacher on a weekly basis. Technology is also an integral part of the classroom environment. Computers are available for student use in the classroom and lessons often take place there as well.

The main areas of focus in the technology program in the Lower School are communication and media literacy as the students learn to be critical users and creative producers of media. In the Upper School the girls expand what they have learned in the Lower School. The usual technology tools used by students include computers, printers, scanners, microphones and cameras, and AlphaSmart or Writer Plus keyboards.

Lab time is scheduled according to grade level expectations (please review class schedules). All classes come with a classroom teacher. During lab time, students work on individual or small group projects.

Kindergarten, First and Second Grade Focus

  • Use mouse, keyboard, monitor, and printer to successfully operate a computer
  • Practice responsible and ethical use of technology systems and software
  • Gather information from the Web
  • Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology
  • Use developmentally appropriate multimedia resources and educational software for problem solving, communicating, and expressing thoughts or ideas
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers

Third and Fourth Grade Focus

  • Use keyboards and other common input/output devices effectively
  • Understand ethical and responsible uses of technology
  • Use productivity tools and peripherals to support and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum
  • Use technology tools for individual and collaborative communication and project development for multiple audiences
  • Use multiple technology resources effectively to access information, communicate with others, and participate in collaborative problem solving activities
  • Understand common use of technology, determine when the use of technology is applicable, and select the appropriate tool(s)
  • Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, and reliability of media

Technology tools and software are ever changing. It is our goal that students have a sense of the power and utility of these tools and are comfortable both using and critiquing them. As new technology emerges, students will be encouraged to apply prior knowledge and continue the exploration and development of their 21st century skills.
