Physical Education
The physical education program is designed to teach students about their bodies: how they work and how to keep them healthy. We provide activities to enhance and develop each child. Daily lessons are structured for quality learning experiences that create an environment fostering individual success, positive self-image, and growth through self-discovery. Health education is an important part of our program. Academic and music course work are integrated as well. Daily success in physical education leads to social and emotional growth that can assist academic achievement.
Kindergarten and First Grade
- Kindergartners meet once a week for 30 minutes and every other week for an additional 30 minutes. Each color group has two PE teachers, keeping the student to teacher ratio low.
- First graders meet every day for 30 minutes with one PE teacher for each class.
- Through exploration and guided discovery, kindergarten and first grade children are encouraged to move in their environment while they enjoy exploring space and practice controlling their bodies.
- Movement Education develops spatial, lateral, tactile awareness, and "how I move in my environment."
- Manipulative Skills integrate balls, ropes, bean bags, hoops, and parachutes with locomotion skills.
- Dance, games, strength, and balance activities are included.
- Fitness-Movements for agility, flexibility, and endurance are practiced.
- Gross Motor Skills-Basic locomotion skills are part of our daily practice.
Second through Fourth Grades
- Second through fourth graders meet daily for approximately 40 minutes.
- Students continue to master basic motor skills and their sequential combinations.
- They complete activities that fine-tune motor and manipulative skills.
- They practice rhythmic movements to further develop coordination and an appreciation of dance.
- Students are introduced to and concentrate on teamwork, stressing cooperation, sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play.
Throughout grades K-4, activities are selected which are age appropriate, challenging, and integrate learning experiences. Creative exploration and expression are encouraged in daily physical and mental challenges.
Lower School Physical Education curriculum follows national and California Physical Education Standards.
